Bird-Migration Forecast
The bird migration forecast since 12th of January 2012 for the German airspace reads:
In the forecast period, the probability of bird strikes is very low. Due to the mild weather, the winter migration of some bird species is less pronounced, so that some migratory birds and short-distance migrants are still there. Particularly on the coasts of the North and Baltic Sea and in the north German lowlands waders and waterfowls are still there in high numbers. The mild temperatures may cause that some bird species begin to fill their breeding sites. Similarly, persistently warm temperatures during the second forecast period can already induce an increasing migration activity. Moderate bird migration is currently being held in Central Germany, in the lowlands of the Elbe, Weser and Aller as well as on the coasts of the North Sea. Regions with a high number of nordic winter visitors like swans and geese are still amongst others the Rügen-Bock-Region, Rhin-/ Havelluch, Middle Elbe and Diepholzer Moorniederung. The movements reach flight altitudes of up to 6000 ft (GND) – remain however usually clear below it. They take place by day, strengthened in the twilight phases. There is a low risk of bird strike with still high probability of a loss.
During wintertime airports are attractive feeding- and collecting-points to bird species like wild pigeons, gulls and birds of prey. Additionally, in the forecast period a presence of large flocks of crows is to be expected.
